The Naka Island Resort Review : Perfect Retreat In Phuket

Table of content

Recently, I had the pleasure of staying at this incredible resort called The Naka Island Resort on my birthday trip to Phuket. I come here after the first night at JW Mariott Khao Lak.

From the moment I arrived, I was struck by the sheer beauty and tranquility of the island. With pristine white sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and lush tropical vegetation, Naka Island Resort is a true paradise.

But what really sets this resort apart is its commitment to providing the ultimate in luxury and relaxation. From the world-class amenities to the exceptional service, every detail has been carefully considered to ensure an unforgettable stay.

In this review, I’ll be sharing my personal experience at Naka Island Resort, and why I believe it’s one of the best luxury resorts in Thailand.

About Naka Island Resort

Naka Island Resort is a luxury collection under the renowned Marriott Group, located on the stunning Naka Island just off the coast of Phuket, Thailand. The resort boasts a range of world-class amenities and exceptional service, making it a top choice for travellers seeking the ultimate in luxury and relaxation.

One of the unique features of Naka Island Resort is its stunning location on Naka Island itself. The island is known for its pristine white sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and lush tropical vegetation, making it a true paradise for nature lovers and beachgoers alike.

The local belief is that there is a dragon spirit present on the island, and this belief is reflected in the resort’s design and decoration. From the intricate dragon-themed decor in the villas to the dragon sculptures adorning the entrance, the resort pays homage to the mystical spirit of the dragon in Thai mythology.

Getting To The Naka island Resort

Getting to Naka Island Resort from Phuket was a relatively easy process. We took a taxi from our hotel to the Ao Po Grand Marina Port, which was about an hour’s journey.

Upon arrival at the port, we were met by Naka Island escorts who led us to the boat that was reserved exclusively for resort guests. The boat ride took around 10 minutes, and we were able to enjoy stunning views of the turquoise waters of the Andaman Sea along the way.

As we approached the island, we could see the lush greenery of Naka Island come into view. The crystal-clear waters surrounding the island were a breathtaking sight to behold. In the distance, we could see the iconic mushroom-like shape of the resort’s villas, which added to the sense of excitement and anticipation.

The boat docked at a small pier, and we were warmly greeted by the resort staff. The staff helped with our luggage and we walked along the bridge into the island, where we were presented with a hand-folded flower made from pandan leaves before taking part in the Gong ritual and the check-in process.

The staff introduces to us their special Gong Ritual when we arrived at the resort. As a tradition upon arriving at the island, each of us had to strike the Gong three times as a symbol of our arrival. This ritual was particularly meaningful to me, as I had rarely encountered such a unique and welcoming gesture in other resorts. Needless to say, I was thrilled and filled with excitement!

Checking In The Resort

Upon our arrival at Naka Island Resort, we were greeted by a friendly staff member who presented us with a welcome hand-folded flower made from pandan leaves.

The staff member explained that the flower is a symbol of welcome and hospitality in Thai culture, and we were encouraged to keep it with us during our stay at the resort. After receiving the flower, we were escorted to a lounge area for the check-in process.

Before we began the check-in process, the staff member informed us about the resort’s check-in process, which includes a traditional Gong ritual. The Gong ritual is an ancient Thai tradition that is believed to bring good luck and ward off evil spirits. It involves the sounding of a large gong to signal the arrival of guests and to bless them with good fortune. Every guest is required to knock the gong twice upon arrival as a sign of respect and gratitude.

The check-in process itself was smooth and efficient, with the staff member providing us with all the information we needed about the resort and its amenities. We were also given a tour of the resort’s facilities and shown to our villa.

While we were waiting for our villa to ready, we were served with free ice-cream from their restaurant! As told by the hotel staff, they serve free ice cream everyday from 2pm to 4pm, so we get to enjoy the unlimited free ice cream treat from the resort.

Sea View Villa With Private Pool

The first thing that caught my eyes is the charming stone that set up at the entrance of the villa. The friendly staff explained to us that the stone is to show whether or not we prefer a privacy. The charming stone has two faces, which are an eye-opening side and an eye-closing side which represents “Do not disturb”. I find this setting unique and cute!

The Charming Stone is also connected to the “Naka Island Fable” where the natives believe we are located on the Mythical Dragon’s body and the Charming Stone actually represents its eyes. So if the Charming Stone is placed at the entrance of the villa, the Dragon will know and it will take away our bad dreams during the night. I love the story behind it !

The sea-view villa we stayed in was simply stunning. As soon as we walked in, we were struck by the panoramic views of the Andaman Sea visible from the king-sized bed. It was an incredible feeling to wake up in the morning to the sound of the waves and the warm sunlight streaming through the windows.

The bed is decorated with birthday decor because the staff noticed my birth day during our check-in process. How sweet!

The decor is very special and stylish, with natural materials like wood and stone used throughout to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

The villa also came equipped with a private pool, which was the perfect place to relax and soak up the sun. We loved lounging on the pool deck, enjoying the spectacular views of the sea and the lush greenery of the island.

The Villa also comes with a covered terrace with a dining table and chairs. This area is perfect for enjoying a meal or a drink while taking in the beautiful views of the ocean and the lush tropical landscape.

We loved the spacious gazebo in the garden, which was perfect for chilling, reading, and enjoying the sea breeze.

One of the highlights of our sea-view villa was definitely the private sauna and steam room. It was a great way to relax and unwind after a day of exploring the island.

The sauna was located just off the main bedroom area and was big enough for two people to comfortably sit inside.

The steam room, on the other hand, was located in the en-suite bathroom and was perfect for those who prefer a more humid heat. We loved spending time in both the sauna and steam room, as they were a great way to rejuvenate ourselves after a day of activities.

The Amenities

I loved how the attention to detail extended beyond just the standard amenities.

As soon as I entered my villa, I was greeted with a plush king-size bed with luxurious linens, air conditioning, and a flat-screen TV with satellite channels. The minibar was stocked with a range of beverages and snacks, and I was delighted to find a Nespresso coffee machine – a real lifesaver for a coffee addict like me!

But what really stood out to me were the extra touches that made me feel truly pampered. The shampoo and conditioner provided in the villa were from the prestigious Byredo brand, leaving my hair feeling soft and nourished.

I also appreciated the thoughtful addition of a toothbrush and toothpaste, slippers, laundry bag, and a hairdryer. The bathrobe was incredibly soft and cozy – I felt like I was wrapped in a warm hug!

The Bathroom

One of the highlights of my stay at Naka Island Resort was definitely the outdoor bathtub and shower experience. My villa featured a stunning outdoor bathroom, complete with a deep bathtub and a spacious rain shower.

The bathtub was located in a private courtyard, surrounded by lush greenery and offering stunning views of the island’s natural beauty. It was the perfect spot to relax and unwind, surrounded by the peaceful sounds of nature. And with the warm tropical breeze blowing through the courtyard, it felt like the ultimate oasis. To me the perfect moment to enjoy the outdoor bathtub experience was during the night when the weather was more breezy and chilling.

The rain shower was equally impressive, offering a refreshing and invigorating way to start the day. The open-air design of the shower allowed me to feel completely immersed in the natural surroundings, while still enjoying all the comforts of a luxurious bathroom.

The Facilities

This luxurious resort is designed to provide guests with the ultimate vacation experience, and as such, there are a wide range of facilities and activities available for guests to enjoy.

One of the main facilities at the resort is the spa. The Spa Naka offers a wide range of treatments and services to help guests relax and rejuvenate during their stay. From traditional Thai massages to aromatherapy treatments and facials, there is something for everyone at the spa. The spa also features a sauna, steam room, and hot and cold plunge pools for guests to use.

Another highlight of the resort is the infinity pool. The pool is located near the beach, providing guests with stunning views of the Andaman Sea while they swim and relax. The pool area is surrounded by comfortable lounge chairs and umbrellas, making it the perfect spot to soak up the sun or enjoy a refreshing drink.

For those who are looking to stay active during their vacation, the resort has a fitness center that is equipped with a range of cardio and weight training equipment. Compared to our previous stay at the JW Marriott Khao Lak, we noticed that the gym at Naka Island Resort is not as well-equipped. However, we believe that the resort intends to encourage guests to unwind and relax while on vacation rather than focusing on exercise.

The resort also offers yoga and meditation classes, as well as a variety of outdoor activities such as kayaking, snorkeling, and paddleboarding.

Aside from the facilities, The Naka Island Resort also offers a variety of activities for guests to explore the island and its surroundings. One of the highlights is the bike rental to a nearby local village, where guests can experience the local culture and way of life. The bike rental by the hotel is complimentary for first 2 hours and additional hours only charges for 150 Baht per hour.

The Sunset Ritual

Yes, another ritual! haha

One of the unique experiences at the resort was the sunset ritual. According to the local beliefs, making a wish during sunset can make your dreams come true. The resort staff would set up a special area on the beach for this ritual.

As the sun started to set, guests would gather around to make their wishes, with the sound of gentle waves lapping at the shore creating a serene atmosphere. It was a special moment to be able to take in the natural beauty of the island while also taking part in a traditional cultural practice.

We were’nt expecting the sunset ritual but when we arrived at Z-bar to enjoy sunset while sipping cocktail, the staff invited us to join the sunset ritual.

The staff explained very well to us about the sunset ritual and what the locals would do during the ritual. It was a simple yet unique experience. We lighted up a candle and make a wish during sunset.

The Dining

The Naka Island resort offers a range of dining options to suit all tastes. For breakfast, we could choose from a wide variety of dishes at Tonsai Restaurant, which offers both indoor and outdoor seating with a stunning view of the ocean. The breakfast buffet was extensive, featuring both western and Asian options, as well as a live cooking station.

However, I would still compared to the best breakfast buffet I ever had at a resort which is Ritz-Carlton Langkawi. To me, the breakfast at Naka Island Resort is still not as good as the one I had in Ritz-Carlton.

For dinner, we had the option of dining in-room or trying out at either Tonsai restaurant for Thai food or Rum Chapel Restaurant. The staff recommended us Tonsai for Thai-style dinner and since we were craving for Thai food we went for Tonsai during the night.

The dinner is complimentary in our resort package. So we get to choose 3 course meal for each of us which included starter, main course and dessert. We ordered Tom Yam soup, pork skewers, Pad Thai, fried fish, fried banana and mango rice. Drinks are not included so we have to order and pay on our own.

Overall the food is average as compared to other Thai food that we had.

Check-Out The Naka Island Resort

The next morning, we were dreading leaving, but all wonderful things must come to an end.

The checkout was pretty quick and the staff helped us with our luggage and send us to the port by the buggy.

During check out, the staff asked us to knock the gong once again. This time, each of us only need to knock once. We were told that this is their tradition.

After the gong ritual, the boat arrived and the staff brought us to the Marina port .

Overall, we had a pleasant yet memorable experience staying at the Sea View Villa in The Naka Island Resort.  With the best views of the beautiful sea attentive staff and  super Zen vibe, the Naka Island Resort has everything one would expect from a top end hotel in Thailand especially if you are looking for a natural getaway staycation.
