Lone Pine Hotel Review : A Retreat in Batu Ferringhi

Table of content

On Christmas Eve, my family and I decided to embark on a nostalgic trip to Batu Ferringhi in Penang. We wanted to go for a beach side and sea view hotel, so we decided to go to Batu Ferringhi!

It was a special journey down memory lane, reminiscent of the staycations my parents used to treat us to when we were younger—a tradition we cherished for its relaxed and carefree atmosphere.

And this time, we booked for a night stay at Lone Pine Hotel.

Lone Pine, Penang, A Tribute Portfolio Resort

Lone Pine Hotel is situated on Batu Ferringhi Beach, one of the liveliest and popular destinations in Penang.

Established in 1948, it stands as one of Penang’s oldest beach hotels, contributing to the island’s legacy as a sought-after tourist destination.

Originally built as a private beach bungalow in the 1940s, the property underwent a transformation into a hotel. During the old times, it served as a 10-room hotel by the beach and gradually it transformed into a resort.

It has now rebranded as Lone Pine, Penang , A tribute portfolio resort.

It has a similar vibe to E&O Hotel in Penang, featuring a colonial and heritage ambiance.

Arriving At Lone Pine Hotel

Lone Pine hotel is located at Batu Ferringhi and just right after Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort and Golden Sands resort.

When we arrived at the guard post, the guard was extremely welcoming.

Once we passed the guard post and entered the parking space, the greenery around captivated us with its delightful ambiance.

After parking, we strolled down the narrow stone pathway to reach the reception for check-in.

The reception area has a laid-back resort style, different from a grand hotel lobby. It’s an open-air space with just two desks for check-in and check-out management.

We booked two Deluxe guest rooms for this trip, but to our surprise, the receptionist upgraded one of our rooms to a Premier Courtyard room!

After checking in and providing a RM 200 deposit, we proceeded to our rooms.

Premier Courtyard Room

The Premier Courtyard room we got is Room 600 and it is just few steps away from the reception.

The room is large , with 52 square meter in space and could easily fit 3 persons.

There is a large king bed and a sofa bed in the room.

As the name implies, the room type comes with a private courtyard at the other end, allowing us to walk out and relax.

We could access the garden directly from our room by walking through the courtyard.

The pool is also just a few steps away from our room!

The rooms at Lone Pine underwent a renovation in 2018, adopting a colonial and greyish design theme.

There are ceiling fans in the room and the courtyard to keep things cool, letting in the fresh sea breezes.

The king size bed is very comfortable. And the extra sofa bed is very big for a sofa bed too.

The room came with standard amenities.

It came to my surprise that the drinks inside the minibar was complimentary and only need to pay if we requested a refill.

They also surprised us with welcome cookies and M&M chocolates inside the room, adding a cute touch in celebration of the Christmas season.

Bar And Dinner

The Bungalow & Batubar

The resort has only one restaurant which is The Bungalow. It usually serve both a la carte dinner and buffet. However, during our visit on Christmas eve, they only serve Christmas dinner buffet at RM 218 per adult. We did not book for the dinner buffet so in the end we went out to Ferringhi Garden for dinner.

Beside the Bungalow is the beachside cocktail bar called Batubar. The vibe at the bar is laid-back, with a touch of oceanic blue and sandy white tones.

Breakfast At Lone Pine

Our room came with complimentary breakfast buffet for two person. So, we headed to the Bungalow for our breakfast buffet.

The breakfast is international style with lots of selection such as English breakfast, chinese porridge, local Hokkien mee and also egg station.

There are both outdoor and indoor seating areas. The setup is quite cozy, resembling a relaxed beachside atmosphere.

Beach And Pool

The hotel has two swimming pool. One is a L-shaped large pool for adult and another one is a smaller pool for kids.

The smaller pool also includes a jacuzzi section. I really like how they’ve set up the pool area with Bohemian-styled tents around the pool sides.

The hotel also provides beach access from the proximity. We could just walk from the hotel to the beach through a gate. It is a public Batu Ferringhi beach. If you like water activities like parachuting or boat, then that would be very convenient.

And, we walked along the beach where it brought us to the popular landmark – Ferringhi Walk and the famous seaview Starbucks.

The Facilities

The hotel also offers standard hotel facilities.

There is a 24 hour gym room and a spa. Unfortunately, the spa was closed during our visit hence we were not able to try out the spa experience.

Besides the spa and gym, one thing I like about their facilities is the spacious recreation room. Inside the recreation area, there is a large TV playing the sports channel. And there are snooker table and pingpong for guests to play!

Checking Out

The checkout process was quick and smooth.

Till next time!

Overall Impression

This is our first time visiting Long Pine resort in Penang.

Although it is smaller in size as compared to other resorts in Penang, but it truly stands out for its relaxing vibe and make us feel like disconnected from the world for a while.

The resort is clean and cozy. On the service side, we encountered a minor issue as there was no hairdryer provided initially. We had to call the reception to request one. Fortunately, the reception responded promptly, and a hairdryer was delivered to our room.

Overall, I think I would return to Lone Pine resort next time for a relaxing beach side staycation.
