My Favourite Hotel Review : Eastern & Oriental Hotel Penang

Table of content

The elegance of the British style building is one that will catch your eyes when you are in George Town. For almost 136 years, The Eastern & Oriental Hotel Penang – a.k.a E&O Hotel has welcomed the world in timeless style.

As a Penangite myself, it was my first time staying in this luxurious hotel during my last year’s birthday celebration. We decided to stay at E&O Hotel for my birthday since we were only allowed to travel within the state during the pandemic.

About Eastern & Oriental Hotel

Eastern & Oriental Hotel (E&O) in Penang was first established by Sarkies Brothers in 1885. Since then, it had welcomed a number of famous guests like Charlie Chaplin, Lee Kuan Yew, Hermann Hesse, Michelle Yeoh, to name a few.

Over the years, E&O Hotel was being well maintained and refurbished. The hotel has 2 wings: Victory Annexe and Heritage Wing.

Victory Annexe was demolished and rebuilt in 2013.The Victory Annexe was created with the conveniences of the contemporary traveler in mind, but also preserving the classic ambiance  that are characteristic of the Eastern & Oriental Hotel. At this wing, it has a swimming pool on a higher floor which overlooks the ocean.

In December 2019, Heritage Wing emerged from a thorough restoration and renovation programme. The restoration preserved the colonial architectural charm of this wing and level up the atmosphere. Unlike Victory Annexe, this Heritage wing features a ground floor level swimming pool area.

Checking In E&O Hotel

When we arrived, we parked our car at the Victory Annexe Wing and walked down the stairs to the reception. If you are staying at Victory Annexe Wing, it is quite convenient for you to park your car there but if you are staying at the Heritage Wing like us , I recommend you park your car near the Heritage Wing.

The staff greeted us welcomingly and made sure we sanitized before entry. Since the hotel was relatively quiet due to the pandemic, check in was a breeze.

The reception area at the Heritage Wing also appeared in the scene of the famous film The Crazy Rich Asian! I especially admired the dark wood key slots cabinet at the reception area that also appeared in the movie which exudes elegance and British style.

Heritage Wing Premier Suite

When we were escorted to our suite, we were in awe by how beautiful the view from our room was! Our room was on the second floor of the building and featured a nice sea facing balcony. The suite was spacious for us which consisted of a seating area, bedroom and a luxurious bathroom with separate lavish bathtub and shower.

The room was very spacious and had a serene atmosphere. The suite’s dark wood furnishings and heritage-inspired structure lived up to its moniker. The bathroom design was my favourite! It featured a picturesque checkerboard floor tile with a long bathtub at the centre along with a mirror backdrop.

Outside the bathroom is where the mini bar area located which included Nespresso coffee machine, snacks and a fully stocked fridge.

Eastern & Oriental Hotel has two sides, one is facing the sea while another one facing the city of Penang. We chose the one with a sea view. Overlooking the sea from the balcony was the best way to spend the evening. Looking over from the balcony was the swimming pool at the ground floor area. With the windows opened, you will listen to not only the sound of waves but also the sound of the visitors lounging by the poolside.

The Breakfast

The breakfast comes complimentary with every booking with the E&O Hotel. We had our breakfast buffet at the Palm Court located in the lobby area.

The setting of the dining area was calming and comfortable.

Due to the pandemic situation, the breakfast buffet was switched to the a la carte style. We could place as many orders as we wanted from the menu, and each one would be served with attractive plating.

The breakfast was a thumbs up for a five star hotel in Penang. If you would like to come on any random day just for breakfast, I would highly recommend doing so.

After a full breakfast, we went for a walk along the seaside and also strolled to the hallway outside the Cornwallis to see the art showcases.

The Facilities at E&O Hotel

E&O hotel has two swimming pools, one at Heritage Wing and another one at the Victory Annexe. We went for the one at our Heritage Wing. The pool is large enough for uninterrupted swim. I especially liked the view from the pool area, and lying by the pool was very relaxing.

Every corner here is picture-perfect!

Check-Out The E&O Hotel

The next morning, we were dreading leaving, but all wonderful things must come to an end.

The checkout was pretty quick and we handed over our car park ticket for free parking verification.
