Cafes In KL

The café scene in Kuala Lumpur (KL) has been growing steadily over the years, with a noticeable boom in the early to mid-2010s. Around this time, there was a significant increase in the number of specialty coffee shops, trendy cafes, and artisanal eateries in KL.

The rise of social media platforms, particularly Instagram, also played a role in popularising café culture, as people began sharing photos of their food and coffee experiences, contributing to the trendiness of certain cafes and restaurants

The cafe scene in KL is pretty dynamic and constantly evolving. In this post, I would love to share with you my recommended cafes in KL that offer great coffee and breakfast options. While some are newcomers in town, many others on this list are considered the OGs of the café scene in Malaysia.

VCR

VCR is a cafe that has been part of Kuala Lumpur’s burgeoning cafe culture since its early days.

While they have expanded with several branches across the Klang Valley, the original branch on Jalan Galloway remains my absolute favourite. VCR does not only serve great coffee, the breakfast and lunch choices are amazing.

Since VCR is my number 1 go-to cafe and I has been a regular now, I have tried nearly everything on the menu and I’ve fallen in love with every single dish they offer!

My favourites on the menu would be the soft-shell crab burger and the French Toast.

The staff are friendly and welcoming and the vibe is great too.

LOKL

LOKL is another gem I found recently when I was exploring different cafes in town.

LOKL cafe is tucked away in the middle of the famous historic area Tun HS Lee in KL. Along the street, there are several new cafes too.

LOKL cafe is already a famous cafe among locals and tourists. The cafe offers two distinct atmospheres. One side boasts a cozy outdoor seating area, while the other embraces a laid-back, rustic decor.

They serve great range of food and coffee as well. My favourite breakfast from them is the fried chicken with waffle and the burger! Get here early to get a good spot for breakfast and avoid lining up.

Merchant's Lane

Merchant’s Lane is one of the special and famous cafes in town due to its unique fusion of cafe food.

Situated in the bustling Petaling Street area, Merchant’s Lane occupies the upper floor of a historic shop lot.

One of the aspects that has always drawn me to Merchant’s Lane is their distinctive menu. In the past, it was quite uncommon to come across dishes like curry chicken or nasi lemak in a café setting.

Most cafes typically leaned towards serving Western-style brunches. However, Merchant’s Lane successfully bridges the gap between Malaysian flavours and Western-style dishes. The fusion has achieved nothing short of spectacular and till today it remains my favourite cafe to go to for brunch.

Dou Dou Bake

This new cafe is very popular in town when it was first opened.

It quickly became one of my favourite go-to cafes in KL after my first visit.

Dou Dou Bake , as it name implies, is a cafe famous for its sourdough and other pastries. However, I like both their pastries and brunches!

Even though their prices are slightly on the higher side, the quality of both the pastries and brunch items justifies every ringgit spent.

The cafe’s decor adds to the overall appeal, offering a cozy atmosphere. They’ve employed minimalistic design elements and transparent windows to create a bright and spacious ambiance

Nutmeg

Nutmeg cafe is one of the rare find good cafe located in Bangsar Village II.

The cafe offers a variety of amazing food , coffee and dessert. Their dessert is the one stand out to me the most.

They not only offer special dishes on their menu but also feature unique homemade desserts that are seldom found in other places.

Their cakes are absolutely delicious, and during special occasions or seasonal changes, they often introduce desserts with special flavors that perfectly match the time of year. And that’s why I always love to visit Nutmeg to find out their new and unique dessert!

Feeka Coffee Roasters

Feeka Coofee Roasters is also on my list of great brunch spots in KL.

It is famous amongst the tourists, mainly because of its prime location at the heart of Kuala Lumpur. It has now opened a few more branches in Klang Valley but the original store at Kuala Lumpur is still my favourite one to visit.

The vibe is relaxing for a Sunday brunch and the staff is super friendly! Not to mention that their brunch and coffee are amazing. I love their breakfast bowls which which provide a healthy and satisfying morning meal for me.

It is often very busy during brunch hours but it tends to quiet down later in the afternoon especially weekdays as most people would choose this cafe as a workspace.
