3 Days In Phuket : The Ultimate Phuket Itinerary

Table of content

Phuket is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Thailand, renowned for its stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife, and rich cultural heritage. From exploring the island’s temples and shrines, to experiencing its vibrant street life and cuisine, Phuket offers a unique blend of relaxation, excitement, and cultural immersion.

Phuket is one of my favourite destinations for a short getaway from my home country. I have been to Phuket a few times and it is such a relaxing place that I swear to come back every time.

In this blog post, I’ll be sharing my ultimate 3 days in Phuket itinerary, covering the must-visit sights and experiences that every traveler should add to their Phuket itinerary especially for first-timers!

Getting Around Phuket

Phuket is an island which relies mostly on Tuk-Tuks and Taxi or e-hailing services. I also saw many tourists riding motorbikes around the island on their own.

  • Tuk-Tuks : This is the most iconic and convenient way to travel around Phuket. It is easily spotted and just head over to negotiate the fare with the driver before the journey.
  • Motorbikes : If you have international license and knows how to ride a motorbike, then you may rent a motorbike and ride from places to places on the island.
  • Ride-hailing : Ride-hailing services like Grab car or Gojek are available in Phuket. It is similar to Uber, only have to book rides and pay the driver in cash or credit cards through the app.

  • Water-Taxi : There are islands around Phuket where you will need to reach by water-taxi or boat. This transportation service is usually inclusive in the island-hopping packages you buy either prior the trip or on the island.

Best Neighbourhoods To Stay

Phuket is a popular island with numerous resorts to stay.

There are exotic resorts on the Phuket beach side and also local-themed Airbnb or hostels around Phuket Old Town. Here are a few great places to stay based on areas and budget :

  • Patong Beach : Here is the most popular area for nightlife. Grand Mercure Phuket Patong is a mid-range five-star hotels to stay if you want to stay close to where the nightlife things are happening.

  • Kata Beach : Checkout the resorts at Kata Beach if you prefer quiet and peaceful sea view resort to stay. Chanalai Garden resort at Kata Beach is one of the best resort in the area.

  • Karon Beach : Karon beach is by far my favourite area to stay in Phuket. It is a paradise for family with kids. There are plenty of amazing resorts at Karon Beach for family. Thavorn Palm Beach Resort is one of the best resort I have stayed in Karon Beach and it is very calm and suitable for family.

  • Phuket Old Town : Most of the hotels and hostels in the Old Town are consist of city view or town view. As the area is far away from the beach, hotels in this area do not generally come with sea view or beach access. If you want to explore the Phuket Old Town , visit Ratri Hotel for a lovely stay.

  • Kamala Beach : Another secluded beach area for couples or family. There are a few notable grand resorts at Kamala Beach and Novotel resort is one of the best!

Best Time To Visit Phuket

When planning a trip to an island, the best time to go is always during the dry season.

Phuket is a tropical island but it has its on and off-season as well.

Enjoying the sunshine on the island is possible almost all year round, but the best time to visit Phuket is between December and March because this period offers the most comfortable weather on the island.

Phuket Itinerary Overview

Day 1 : Patong Beach, Bangla Road, Nightlife

Day 2 : Koh Phi Phi , Kao Yao Yai, Maya Bay, Kim’s Massage

Day 3 : Phuket Old Town, Ma Doo Bua cafe

And let’s dive deep into the itinerary:

Day 1: Arrival and Relaxing at Patong Beach

Phuket is an island located at Southern Thailand which is very close to Malaysia. The journey from Penang to Phuket only takes 1 hour by flight.

After landing at Phuket International Airport, we made our way to The Nature Phuket, our hotel for the next two nights. We were unable to call Grabcar to pick us up at the airport since e-hailing services are not allowed.

To avoid getting apprehended by the authorities, the Grab driver instructed us to walk to a farther stretch of the roadside. In the end, carrying our stuff to our hotel, we boarded an 11-seater van instead of using e-hailing services.

The ride costed us 1500 Baht for a one-hour journey to our hotel. Which I checked was more expensive than calling hotel airport transfer that only costs about 1000 Baht.

The Nature Phuket is a tranquil and serene hotel, located amidst lush greenery and surrounded by breathtaking views of the Andaman Sea. We were greeted with a warm welcome by the hotel staff and was immediately impressed by the hotel’s facilities, which included a beautiful swimming pool, several dining options, and comfortable guest rooms.

Once we had settled into my room and freshened up, we headed to Patong Beach, one of the most famous and popular beaches in Phuket.

The three-kilometer-long stretch of soft white sand and turquoise waters was the perfect place to spend a relaxing day in the sun. we lounged on the beach, took a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters, and enjoyed the sights and sounds of the beachfront restaurants, bars, and shops.

In the evening, we headed to Bangla Road, the heart of Phuket’s nightlife.

The street is lined with street vendors, live music, and tourists, making it the perfect place to experience the vibrant energy of Phuket. We sipped on a refreshing cocktail, soaked up the atmosphere, and enjoyed the lively street performances until late into the night.

Bangla Road boasts numerous bars and shops, accompanied by potentially loud music. If you’re looking for a more tranquil ambiance, you can opt for the bars overlooking Patong Beach. This area offers a more laid-back and relaxed atmosphere.

Day 2: Island-Hopping and Exploring Patong

On the second day, we went on an island-hopping tour, visiting some of Phuket’s most beautiful islands, including Koh Phi Phi, Koh Yao Yai, and the famous Maya Bay.

The island-hopping tour was a highlight of our Phuket experience, as it allowed us to explore the island’s stunning natural beauty and swim in its crystal-clear waters.

The tour took us to several favourable locations in the midst of the sea for snorkelling. During the snorkelling sessions, we had the chance to see some of the most astonishing marine creatures beneath the surface like fishes , sea urchins , pretty corals and many many more.

Koh Phi Phi was the first stop on our island-hopping tour. This stunning island is famous for its white sandy beaches and turquoise waters, and is surrounded by towering cliffs and lush vegetation. We snorkeled in the island’s waters, admiring the vibrant coral reefs and the diverse marine life, before relaxing on the pristine white sand beaches.

Koh Yao Yai was the next stop on my tour, and it was just as breathtaking as Koh Phi Phi. This peaceful and serene island is surrounded by lush jungle and crystal-clear waters, making it the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of Phuket’s more touristy areas. We spent several hours exploring the island, taking a refreshing swim in its waters, and soaking up the sun.

The final stop on my island-hopping tour was the famous Maya Bay, made famous by the movie “The Beach“. This stunning bay is surrounded by towering cliffs and crystal-clear waters, and is a popular spot for snorkelling and swimming. The vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life made it a truly unforgettable experience.

After the island-hopping tour, we headed back to Patong Beach to rest and recharge. We decided to treat ourselves to a massage at Kim’s Massage, a renowned spa and massage centre in Phuket. The massage was the perfect way to relieve any tension and rejuvenate our body and mind.

Kim’s massage has several branch on the island. We visited Kim’s massage two years ago at the Phuket Old Town branch when we were in Phuket and we liked the service overall so we decided to go to Kim’s again. This time we went to the other branch at Patong beach.

In general, we found the Old Town branch to be our preferred choice. If you happen to have the opportunity to visit Phuket Old Town, I would suggest considering a visit to Kim’s Massage there.

After the relaxing massage session, we headed to a nearby cafe to try some of Phuket’s delicious street food.

I ordered a variety of dishes, including Pad Thai, Green Curry, and Papaya Salad, and was blown away by the flavours and aromas of the dishes. The street food in Phuket is truly a feast for the senses, and is a must-try for all visitors to the island.

Day 3: Exploring Phuket Old Town and Ma Doo Bua

On our final day in Phuket, we decided to explore the island’s rich cultural heritage by visiting Phuket Old Town. This historic district is home to several beautiful temples, shrines, and traditional Chinese shops, and is a must-visit for anyone interested in the island’s history and culture.

There are a lot of interesting shops here and cafes occupied mostly by digital nomads.

The heritage area of the Phuket Old Town sort of remind me of my hometown, Penang. Penang has a district where it is an heritage area with the similar beautiful buildings.

Phuket Old Town, which is known for its beautifully preserved Sino-Portuguese architecture. The street is lined with traditional Chinese shophouses, many of which have been converted into stylish cafes, restaurants, and boutiques. We strolled down the street, admiring the beautiful buildings, and stopping at a few shops to pick up some souvenirs and local handicrafts.

After exploring the streets, we stopped by at a Michelin star restaurant for lunch. We visited the restaurant (Tu Kab Khao) few years back and we loved it! So this time, we decided to revisit and ordered a ew scrumptious Thai food for lunch.

Finally, we visited Ma Doo Bua, the resort was surrounded by lush greenery and provided a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. We spent some time exploring the grounds and admiring the serene beauty of the pond. We also had the opportunity to try some traditional Thai dishes at the resort’s restaurant, which were delicious.

Ma Doo Bua was the perfect way to end our 3-day, 2-night Phuket itinerary. The tranquil atmosphere and breathtaking surroundings provided a peaceful and relaxing end to our time on the island. If you’re looking for a peaceful retreat in Phuket, I highly recommend checking out Ma Doo Bua and its beautiful water lily pond.

Ma Doo Bua resort is actually a recent popular resort and cafe. It is a resort but is widely known for its giant lily pond making it one of a great photo spots !

The photography location at Ma Doo Bua is widely sought after, making it advisable to visit during the early morning to circumvent the crowds. Additionally, there is a drone photography service available, so it’s recommended to make reservations in advance to secure your ideal shots at this amazing place.

So, that’s how I spent 3 days in Phuket with my family.

My 3-day, 2-night Phuket itinerary was a truly unforgettable experience, filled with adventure, relaxation, and cultural immersion.

Whether you’re looking for a peaceful getaway or an action-packed adventure, Phuket has something to offer everyone. If you come to Phuket the first time, this itinerary is best for you to explore the town, the islands around and the good food!
